What is the effect of piercing type damage on a bow.

I believe piercing is a chance to by-pass the AC of a character but im not 100% certain.

yea all i know is that it does some great damge to all clases while some i do wiht my bow i do about 40-50 damge to warriors i think its becaouse of peircing.
